FLOORBALL
Floorball is a team sport played on an indoor field surrounded by a boarding of 50 cm height. The field players play with a plastic stick and the goalkeeper plays on the knees. The ball is round and light.
Floorball is a very dynamic sport; the changes of players during the match are unlimited. A player leaves the field for re-entering it only a few minutes later.
Fouls are sanctioned either by free kicks or by penalty minutes.
The standard field size is 40m x 20m with a 33 m distance between the goals. Each team is composed of 5 field players and the goalkeeper.
A match is played in 3 thirds of 20 minutes, but this is adapted according to the different championships and the age categories.

THE ORIGINES
Floorball (also called unihockey or salibandy) was first practiced in Minneapolis (USA) in the early 60s. In the early days it was played in the US and Canada before it found its way to Scandinavia in the 70s. There it became very successful, particularly in Sweden, where the first national floorball federation was founded in 1981, followed by many others in the course of the 80s.
The International Floorball Federation was founded in 1986 upon the initiative of Sweden, Switzerland and Finland.
Since then, floorball became popular across the globe and is today played in over 60 countries. About 300.000 players contest in competitions and some 2 million play floorball "just for fun", mostly in schools.
The Belgian Floorball Federation (BBF), founded in 1995, counts 1.500 members.
Floorball has been a popular and quickly growing sport during the last 30 years and is set for developing further in the years to come.
In some countries floorball is played on professional level, which requires consistent and hard training for its top players, but it remains a popular sport for all : girls and boys, young and less young, tall and small. And it is a quickly growing discipline which requires no expensive investment.
